WTB: Rear fat bike wheel with 170x12 thru axle

    October 22, 2015, 12:44 PM

Probably a long shot but I'm looking for a 26 inch fat bike wheel (for a 4 inch tire) that has a 170x12mm thru axle. These are hard to find online unless you plan to build one yourself. It's for a 2015 Trek Farley 6.

You sure it's not 177x12 mm TA? The 170mm is usually QR.

If I'm not mistaken, the Farley uses a "closed convert" dropout that sorta acts like a TA, but the hub is actually a QR.

I think you need a regular old 170mm QR hub, but I'm not positive.

The rear axle acts like a quick release but it threads into the frame on the drive side. The distance between dropouts is 170mm, but I guess you'd need a bit longer for the threads so probably is 177x12. I have the same setup on my Fuel EX, except that rear axle is 142x12. From what I can find online, most wheels use a standard QR hub, or a TA for a 190mm hub.

I'm 99% sure that you need a 170mm QR hub for that.

It just requires a longer QR skewer, not a wider hub.  I had a borrowed Superfly100 that used the same system on a regular 135mm QR hub.

Do you have the frame in hand?  I have a wheelset you can test fit.  The wheels are for sale too BTW...kinda skinny rims though.

There are kind of a lot of rear hub standards in fat bikes.

170mm QR or 177mm TA (just like 135mmQR/142mmTA on a regular MTB).

    190mmQR or 197mm TA (7mm difference just like 135/142)

Thanks for the offer Nate. I do have the frame so I can track down a test wheel. I'll run it by a friend who works at Trek. He designs the darn things so I would think he should be able to tell me

The 2015 Farley 6 came stock with a 177x12mm rear hub.  However, the rear dropouts on the frame can be converted to 170mm QR, so I would make sure your dropouts are 12mm.

Thanks all for the input. I'm new to the fat bike thing so still on the steep end of the learning curve. The Farley 6 comes with 177x12 dropouts but it can be converted to 170x10 quick release with some new dropout inserts. The conversion kit cost $60. I found a set of Bonty Jackalopes that will fit the frame.

I'm new too - have gone from renting at CamRock or up north to buying a used Farley. I've made and kept a bunch of notes.

I'm really pleased with the way the Jackalopes went to tubeless. In my case they had the Bontrager tires that perform considerably better tubeless. At least pre-snow. My homework for those should yours not have Trek's parts is you should have their stem but other 21 mm tape works fine for the conversion. I used more sealant than I do for regular MTB tires.

I wonder if that kit you bought is same as a spare der hanger??? Over the years I've bought those for my bikes.

I suggest the analog air gauges Trail This stocks. The 30 psi model works for regular and fat. I find I spend much less time getting pressure right if I start with the gauge.
