These FAQs will be updated as new information is available.Q: I've heard that a "Master Plan Revision" process has begun for Blue Mound State Park (BMSP). What does this mean for the mountain bike trails there? Wasn't there just a Master Plan amendment a few years ago? A: This is a rare opportunity for the trail system, which has been enjoyed by countless individuals since 2000. Capital Off Road Pathfinders has an ambitious but realistic goal of revitalizing much of the system to enable a wider range of riders to enjoy the trails, including the creation of a beginner-friendly (green) trail, while keeping enough of the "legacy"experience intact. In the same effort, the trails will be built with a strong bias towards reducing the effects of heavy rainfall and spring melt, which will also allow them to dry out and be usable sooner after rain events. Maintenance needs will also be greatly reduced.
Regarding the Master Plan Amendment from 2015, the amendment was invalidated in court. The current process allows the DNR to update the Master Plan in its entirety.
Q: When you say "Beginner trail" or "Beginner-friendly trail", does this mean the trail will be "dumbed down"?A: The difficulty level of the singletrack at Blue Mound currently ranges from Intermediate to Advanced. There is very little for the novice riders just starting out. One of our primary goals is to create a level of progression that allows riders of various abilities access to the trails, with room to grow their skills and find new ways of enjoying the trails. Since this will be a more modern design, the trail can be made to suit riders of many levels simultaneously by making it speed-insensitive and providing optional features. There will still be plenty of advanced technical riding for those who enjoy that.
Q: What end result are you expecting?A: We hope the WI DNR, Natural Resources Board, and general public agree that access to active outdoor recreation is one of the best uses of State Parks. Not only does it contribute to the overall physical and mental health and well-being of the community, it also can be a great driver economically, especially for rural areas. If you have any ideas or thoughts how a great system of mountain bike trails might benefit you, please share them; we need your help!
Q: This sounds great! What can I do to support these efforts?A: There are many ways! The WI DNR will likely accept public input again later this year. In the meantime, the best thing to do is stay informed, support CORP by being an active member, and watch for updates! Please also consider supporting the
Friends of Blue Mound State Park who are excellent stewards and partners.
Q: Where can I find more information?A: Details and the current status of the Master Plan Revision can be found on the
DNR website, and we'll post updates on the
CORP website and
Facebook page. You can also like/follow the
Blue Mound MTB Facebook page.
